Juvenile Cinereous Vulture from Dadia

In the early hours of November 8, a juvenile cinereous vulture from Dadia, which was urgently transported to Athens by plane, arrived at ANIMA’s First Aid Station. The animal had been found earlier that afternoon lying in reeds by members of the Society for the Protection of Biodiversity of Thrace, NECCA staff and the Petfriendkavala team.

It is a young individual that had recently been released from the reintroduction cage supported by the BSPB, as part of the Life Rhodope Vultures program. The bird was found exhausted and has been receiving intensive IV therapy since its arrival. It will soon undergo a full health screening to check for further issues. For now, it is very encouraging that it is eating well.

Once again, we are grateful to Aegean Airlines, as thanks to its immediate response many of these birds have been saved, since they can receive specialized care within a few hours.

Cinereous vultures are birds of exceptional importance for the ecosystem and are classified as near threatened by the IUCN, while Greece is home to part of the last population in southeastern Europe.
