Since October the 3rd, ANIMA has been caring for an adult female red deer that was found in the backyard of a house in Acharnes. The animal sought refuge there because it had suffered an injury to its left hind leg. The Parnitha Forestry Department and a team from ANIMA rushed to the scene with veterinarian Grigoris Markakis, who anesthetized the animal from a distance using special equipment. The deer had an old, open, and infected crush fracture in its left metatarsal, near the tarsal joint, and immediate amputation of the limb was deemed necessary to save the animal’s life. For this purpose, it was transported, accompanied by the veterinarian, to the Animalovet veterinary clinic in Metamorfosi, where the amputation was performed, and then to the Attica Zoological Park, in a specially designed, non-visitor cage where it will remain until it has fully recovered. Her post-operative care will be lengthy and she will need a lot of attention until she can go outdoors. In the next stage, in collaboration with the Forest Management Directorate, we will examine where she will be transferred, along with the other doe we have been caring for since last June, so that the animals are safe.
This is the third red deer from Parnitha that ANIMA has taken in over the last few months.
